WOMEN OF ACTION SPORTS: ABBY CRUZ RAMOS

WOMEN OF ACTION SPORTS: ABBY CRUZ RAMOS

For many surfers, one of the greatest lessons is to learn how to roll with the waves - both literally and figuratively. Every crash is an opportunity to rise up and grow. And you’d gladly do it all again. You enjoy the sport in the simplest of ways for it’s just you and your board and the water. Yet, there’s a connection, an enlightenment that guides you for life.

Abby Cruz Ramos, a self-described city girl but is now a beach girl, experienced this firsthand. She enjoys surfing and freediving and how these activities uplift her spirit. Like many others,  Abby found new clarity and home within the waves of the sea.

We talked to the beauty queen on her thoughts on empowered women of action sports as well as her advocacies.

GRIND: What’s the most epic thing about being a woman in action sports?

ABBY: A woman can be more and do more in spite of any setbacks that she experiences (hello monthly period). She can be limitless, gentle and be strong at the same time as long as she puts her heart and mind into it. I think as a woman this can be her superpower and still do any sport that she sets her heart into.

GRIND: Do you have any advocacy or passion projects?

ABBY: My mission in life is to make a difference in the lives of women, the youth and the underprivileged. When I meet someone my aim is always purposeful and meaningful. Encouraging others is my strength and my goal is to always inspire people to become the best version of themselves. This is also in partnership with my outreach group Pink Women on Fire and ANAK (Alagaan Natin ang Kabataan) and working with them hand in hand makes it all the more worth it, we head out to different parts of the Philippines to teach, empower and to encourage the next generation and their families as well.

GRIND: What advice would you give to a young girl who is just starting off in action sports?

ABBY: Start even if you are not ready. There's no perfect time to do it but now. Take advantage of being young and being able to experience things. Life is an adventure. Go live it, love it and learn a lesson every single step of the way.

GRIND: Where do you see women in action sports 10 years from now?

ABBY: I see women taking over action sports now! The future is actually happening now and the women are just getting started and are taking the sports scene like a storm! I'm excited for what the future holds for these empowered women in sports!

Waves of change are rolling in. We love seeing more and more women, just like Abby,  changing the game and opening it up for the younger generation.

At GRIND, we believe that the action sports community is for everyone. The waves welcome everyone. The rugged terrain challenges everyone. The concrete jungle invites everyone. All you need is the heart and spirit to ride the rush.
