WOMEN OF ACTION SPORTS: PIA GABRIEL

WOMEN OF ACTION SPORTS: PIA GABRIEL

Growing up as young girls, weโ€™re taught to reach for the nearest doll. But, if you grew up like Pia Gabriel, youโ€™ll reach instead for the nearest motorbike. Learning from her father, the lady rider started at a young age and is now zooming past fellow riders, male and female alike.ย

At 23, Pia is riding into a self-made legacy as the Princess of Philippine Motocross scene. Despite the danger, Pia has the skill, passion, and record to dominate any rugged terrain. She will keep on revving up and flying through the dust and dirt, dislocated shoulder be damned.ย

Whatโ€™s the most epic thing about being a woman in action sports?

The most epic thing about being a woman in action sports is that I always feel like a heroine doing her deed. Iโ€™m deeply grateful that I embody woman empowerment in a sport that is known to be male-dominated. I can humbly say that Iโ€™m raising the flag for women athletes. What men can do, women can do it too.

Do you have any advocacy or passion projects?

The image of motosports in the Philippines is not that great because of the โ€œkamoteโ€ or undisciplined riders. Thatโ€™s why I aim to promote and influence riders about rules of safe riding like wearing proper gear, especially helmets. With this, we can provide a healthy environment for all kinds of motorists.

What advice would you give to a young girl who is just starting off in action sports?

Donโ€™t doubt yourself and always face your fears. Believe in yourself that you can do it even if other people say you canโ€™t. If you donโ€™t try it now, you will regret it later.

Where do you see women in action sports 10 years from now?

A better and invested sports system gives greater opportunities for athletes like me. I will do everything on my part to contribute to the recognition of Filipino women in their chosen field of action sports. I hope that women can do these extreme sports with the right guidance and opportunities.

Undaunted and ready to roll through the rubble, Pia is just one of the many women GRIND looks up to. She shares our love for the action and each time sheโ€™s on the dirt tracks, you can feel the palpable excitement surrounding her.ย

Sheโ€™s a reminder of why GRIND strives to create an even more epic community of action sports and its devouts. Why we are dedicated to bringing together everyone - male and female - into the life of relentlessly pursuing the rush.ย

Watch out for more stories like Pia. Weโ€™ll be showcasing more women who are achieving the improbable. Only at Grind, your epic action sports shop.ย
